Entry: WINGMEN - What do you want your community to be?

Hi,

I feel a bit cheeky posting here, but my intentions are pure! I think you have hit the nail on the head and it's the online interaction of your community that will help you push the project forward. There are ready-made solutions that allow you to pool your community resources and reach people such as FriendFeed and MyBlogLog, but whichever one of the many solutions you choose it will take time to set up and maintain.

I hope you can grasp this opportunity because I think the benefits will be enormous for you all. Thank you for listening!

Set up a NING.com community for it and invite all the wingmen. This will give you instant tools for everyone to coordinate and communicate, it will also allow you to share images, videos, and ideas with them before everyone else. Also, it's free. Go for it.

Playing with NING... Is it basically the same thing as Facebook? What would be the advantages?

I admit it: I'm too exhausted to be useful tonight. Have at it. smile

I don't want a situation where it's just
Sawyer and I waving our noodles at each other.

No-one wants to see that! wink

I'm at work and don't have a lot of time, but in my opinion the problem with Facebook (correct me if I am wrong) is that you cannot easily be notified outside of Facebook if someone has posted something on the Wall or as a forum post or whatever it is called. In other words, no RSS. Something like a Wingman blog would be better, in my opinion, because of RSS. Sometimes weeks go by and I don't log into Facebook (I am almost 40, after all). wink

I keep up with Blogs because of RSS. I don't keep up with Facebook because they don't have RSS.

Just my thoughts, before I have to get back to work...

The question is also:

If/when a WINGMEN site is started, who if anyone is interested in contributing to it?

I 2nd (or 3rd?) ning. I believe that's what AskANinja and EpicFu use as their community space.

I love the idea of a wiki for AE wingmen. I listen to a podcast about DisneyWorld (yes, I am a huge park fan, no laughing!) and the podcasters have started a wiki on their site, being contributed to by their listeners where we put up details about inside jokes, show summaries, etc.

http://www.wdwtoday.com/wiki/index.php5?title=Main_Page

Not that you have to become a disney fan or anything, I just put the link in for reference, but this might be something set up by one or a few people, and something that we, the shade, can come and go and contribute to on our own time. Then JSto can link to it, approve it, etc. Probably have to have us all register in some database somewhere. I don't know the technical specifics of setting up something like this.

It needs to not be hackable, so that internet punks with time on their hands can't ruin the fun. I don't really know how to do that.

I think this would be fun, and while I have little time to set it up, I'd be sure to contribute to it as a wingman. We could each take turns as we have time.

I hope this is what Dave was thinking when he sent out the idea.

How does that sound?

i'd love for a community environment to work, but from my limitted experience using such forums, one of 2 things will happen: it will become cluttered with off topic idle chit chat and spamage... or fall into disuse like facebook (never liked facebook). we hardly got any involvement on JSDC.
a wiki may be the better way to go... keep it more focused and on topic. whatever the group chooses, i would totally contribute/ participate.

I am completely clueless as to what type of site would work, but I know I would participate.

Something like NING appears like it might be the easiest to "set up", but I worry that like Facebook it might not have a lot of endurance (and frankly unless someone steps up with a lot of design skill, I don't really care for the aesthetics).

My personal thoughts are that something like The One Ring or Galactica Watercooler might serve better. Chiefly because the content will likely be driven by a handful of contributors (assuming past behaviour as an indicator of future behaviour) with others reading, commenting and perhaps participating in some type of Forum.

Are there any out there who have either indicated interest or who haven't spoken up that are particularily adept at the coding/technical aspect of web design?

NING is cool and has tons of community features, but it would take more effort to get the ball rolling with it. It's kinda like your own custom MySpace and would likely need someone to get it molded to the needs of the Wingmen. But I have no admin experience with NING so YMMV. A wiki might get off the ground quicker.

A lot of people have brought up wikis. Can someone point me to an example of one that they think is similar to what might serve our needs? In my limited knowledge of the format, I was under the impression that it was more suited as a reference-type platform as opposed to an ongoing, interactive community.

Also....do wikis support RSS, because like Curt, I think the ability for Wingmen to be advised or easily notice when new content is put up is key and the major factor in why the Facebook was such an epic fail (aside from the fact that Facebook is teh suck to begin with).

I am interested. I have no advice about what forum to use but I use RSS to keep up as well and that would be a really helpful feature for me.

I agree that wikis are more reference and less "community" but I find them infinitely easier to get around and find useful information on than epicfu and the other community portals. Maybe I am just getting old, and can't sift through the ridiculous amount of information crammed into one page.

Oh, and kids, get off my lawn! smile

I don't know about RSS, though, and I think that's an excellent requirement.

I guess I need to comb the internets some more.

Maybe get started on something like Typepad and grow it from there? When I started JSDC it was solely a blog with a simple design. (I always had original formatting, but that's only because I had a wicked coder in The Gunn and now I freelance Iain when I need updates to the tools originally created for me). So I think the important thing is to get started simple and solid and then grow as you go.

I think it's a great idea. Well done Dave.

Whoa, you got C.Sto feedback.

So I'm thinking this is all the brainstorming we'll get. I hope it's enough to get you started. Let me know how I can support (assets, etc).

BTW as case study have I rec'd The Frodo Franchise to you people yet?

Okay, I just started a blog for free at Blogspot. It looks like you can add authors and it definitely has a feed setup. I'm sending out author invites now. Oh, and URL: http://aewingman.blogspot.com/
So we can try another avenue.
Posting this on ning and JSDC.
