Entry: WATCHMEN Giveaway

It's been many years since I read Watchmen but I especially liked the parallelism in the comic and how Alan Moore treated it as a serious literary story rather than just men in capes tripe. He treated the story as a serious adult thing rather than just something for kids and I think that's what makes it special. My link is a PSN game that comes out tomorrow for $5 that I think looks sweet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFLCqRl-NZ0

What I really loved about Watchmen was that it was probably the first comic that really asked the question "how would people react if there really were costumed crusaders?". It also tackled the issue of what it means for one nation to have such vast superiority over others (I.e. Dr. Manhattan/nukes). The characters were also presented in a very flawed, human way which was a bit of a departure for that era.

As for a link, in keeping with the comic book theme I recommend the free webcomic http://www.freakangels.com penned by Twitterer extraordinaire Warren Ellis. (@warrenellis)

I think that Watchmen resonate well because everyone is busy and needs to know the time and a group of superheros that go around handing out watches is really appreciated. And their watches probably don't turn your arm green like the Rolex I got down on Canal Street.

Here is my link, but you have to click on the "E" to get it started.

You know how to reach me.

I think WATCHMEN resonates for the same reason the stranger archetype resonates: people crave an outsider who can enter, make things right, and fade mysteriously away to await the next crisis to solve. Even better if the stranger/s have skills and gifts that the average lack; we want the extraordinary - as long as it is conformable. Thus the appeal of superheros and the concurrent appeal of shunning the different.

Cool video based on Half-Life and made for < $500: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1UPMEmCqZo

The Watchmen is one of those rare books I repeatedly read over and over again, unearthing new truths from its thick, rich soil of ideas. But why does it resonate the first time?

For the same reason Dark Knight resonated with mainstream audiences this last summer after years of more straightforward flare of Spider-man, Iron Man, and even Batman Begins. A level of maturity regarding the consequences of violence and what it brings into this world. That is always the first theme that draws you; the primal bloodlust that is our dark half.

Countered by Dr. Manhattan noting the miracle of life as embodied by Silk Spectre's backstory.

Hopefully, all of that won't be lost in a flood of merchandising surrounding the movie, as represented by this clever send up:

Cheers.
