I was always partial to the prose in Puff the Magic Dragon. That was my favorite book when I was a child. I always got sad at the end when Puff went away....

I'm probably going to mis-quote him a little bit, but one of my favorite passages is an exchange between Gandalf and Frodo (I think, maybe Bilbo) where they are discussing Gollum and Galdalf says, "Deserves death? I daresay he does. Many that live deserve death. And many who die deserve life. Can you give that life back to them? Then do not be so quick to deal out death."

Yes! This occurs in the Mines in the film (a good choice), but in the book, the exchange happens before Frodo leaves The Shire.

Love it. I read the books every summer. And I agree that a huge part of my attraction to the books is the interaction of song/poem and prose as well as reader interaction with the maps at the beginning of each text.
"Where is he taking us?"
"Into the wild, Master Gamgee." |

I've read The Hobbit, but for some reason have never been able to get through Fellowship. May try again for a 4th time at some point.
